Minnesota is the State of Hockey. In 1895 the University of Minnesota organized an unsanctioned game with a team from Winnipeg and the game has been played indoors and outdoors ever since. Players begin in Pewees and work their way up to the high school level where they have the opportunity every March to play in the state high school hockey tournament. Thousands of fans descend on the Excel Energy Center to watch stupendous hockey and to see some beautiful hockey hair. Minnesota college hockey programs boast five division one schools, and the state has sent 60 more players than second place Massachusetts on to professional careers and nearly 100 more than third place Michigan. Faribault’s Shattuck St Mary’s Prep Academy is one of the premier hockey development schools on the continent and has helped countless players reach the next level. The passion for the game is not solely for professionals, as the US Pond Hockey Championships are played on Lake Nokomis each year.
