Name Origin: Minnesota

Minnesota has an average annual snowfall from 36 inches in the southwest to more than 70 inches along the Lake Superior “snow belt.” Snow is the main form of precipitation from November through March with extremes ranging over 170 inches in the Superior Highlands of the North Shore. The earliest snowfall on record was September 14, 1964, while the latest snowfall on record was June 4, 1935. Grand Portage holds the 170-inch record for maximum seasonal snowfall, while also holding the record for maximum snow depth with 75 inches in March of 1950. Many of these records are far north, however Collegeville in Stearns County holds the record for maximum monthly snowfall of 66.4 inches in March of 1965. Needless to say, Minnesota knows about snow.
